Amateur Radio Emergency Communications functions are being handled by the
Marion County Emergency Radio Communications Team - MERT
MISSION STATEMENT
MERT (ref: 5.2.5 Marion County Comprehensive Emergency Management Plan)
MERT will provide support personnel and equipment, on request of Marion County Office of Emergency Management, to assist in establishing amateur radio communications between the State Emergency Operation Center, Marion County Emergency Operation Center, and emergency facilities and locations activated by the county or its municipalities, e.g., shelters and staging areas, to support response and recovery operations, as well as with designated critical facilities in the community, e.g., hospitals, radio stations, etc.
MERT MEMBERS
MERT members are any ham operators licensed by the FCC and interested in emergency communications. They are volunteers who have skills and training to provide auxiliary emergency radio communications. They fulfill the FCC requirement part 97.1 (a) Recognition and enhancement of the value of the amateur service to the public as a voluntary noncommercial communication service, particularly with respect to providing emergency communications.
They work as volunteer radio operators for the Marion County Office of Emergency Management and they comply with the Sheriff’s Office Code of Conduct for Volunteers.
